Books/CDs: You can always do the self-help route of books and/or tapes from $19.99 to a CD set costing $70.00. In our years of talking with couples that are struggling or in crisis, we hear that one spouse did all the reading or listening while the other mate didn’t want to be bothered with it.

Therapists / Pastoral Counselors: You can find some marriage therapy or pastoral counseling for free, but most therapists or pastoral counselors worth their salt charge anywhere from $75 - $200 an hour. Traditional therapy generally takes at least three months or more of bi-weekly or weekly 1-2 hour sessions for significant change or progress to be made. Most often, couples tell us that they went for awhile, but one spouse stopped going and they weren’t following through on the homework assignments in-between sessions.

Other Marriage Seminars / Retreats: Other marriage seminars might be cheaper, but their format typically involves you and your spouse listening to lectures while you take notes about what you should or should not be doing.
